Biography

Patricia Whiting was born in Bolton in 1950. She graduated from Loughborough with a degree in Fine Art in 1971. After a period of working as an artist, exhibiting in Bolton and Manchester, whilst bringing up a family, she began a career in teaching.

Teaching art eventually led, through specialist training and a further MSc degree, to an Educational Audiology post in Bolton Sensory Service, working with deaf children aged 3 to 18.

Patricia continued to produce art throughout her career in deaf education in a variety of media including print, sculpture and painting. During the course of her teaching she developed skills in visual presentation and digital animation which became her key expressive medium. However, a visit to the Picasso Museum in Paris a few years ago rekindled a desire to make images in more traditional media. She started working on a much larger scale making a nine piece print based on Picasso’s “Demoiselles D’Avignon”. Larger scale projects like this require more time, hence a decision to leave deaf education at Christmas 2007 to pursue art on a full time basis.

Patricia now has a studio in Sutton Bonington and exhibits with South London Women Artists, with Nottingham Society of Artists and with ArtSpace Loughborough.

Artist's Statement

My work has always been influenced by the great artistic innovators of the Twentieth Century. I am particularly affected by Picasso’s depiction of women and the drawing technique of Seurat. Recent drawings however, break away from these stylistic roots, and adopt a more realistic approach, based on direct observation of the model and photographs.
